Info Packet Pick-Up:
If you're planning to pick up your registration packets on Friday
night, please come to the Mount Horeb High School at 305 S. 8th St.
between 3:00 and 9:00 pm. If picking up your info packets on
Saturday, the location will be at the finish line in Blue Mound
State Park. Please be there between 5 am and 6:30 am. A park sticker is
included in your packet; you will get in free to pick up your
packet. Look for signs once at the park. If you come on Saturday
morning, you need to get your packet first and then park your
car. All parking is at the state park.
Parking:
Parking at the finish line in Blue Mound State Park is recommended.
Start:
The self-seeded 7:00 am start is in the Village of Blue Mounds at the corner of Division and Main Streets.
General Description: The Horribly Hilly Hundreds Challenge Ride delivers on its promise,
weaving in and out of valleys untouched by the glacial activity that
left most of the upper Midwest flat. Two challenging options await the
cycling enthusiast: 100 kilometers and 200 kilometers, each with total
elevation gains that make your heart race and your legs cry "uncle."
Set in Southwest Wisconsin, the route starts in the charming village
of Blue Mounds, in an area of strong Norwegian heritage (biking like a
viking!). It makes its way west towards Barneveld, deceptively easy at
first, until it climbs 600 feet on Mounds Park Road, coming oh so close to
the finish line — a line that you won't see until some time
later. The ride winds back through the village of Blue Mounds and
heads north to continue the fun. The course is hilly — horribly
hilly — and manages to find every famous climb in the area, including Barlow Road, Pinnacle Road, and the last 3.5 miles and 900 feet
up tortuous Mounds Park Road, into the park and all the way to the top
of the mound (just to mention three of the more than 40 significant
climbs).
Rider Support:
Sag vehicles and mechanical support will be provided. Aid stations
with beverages, fruit, and carbohydrates will be provided throughout
the course. HAM radio operators will provide safety communications.
Finish Line:
Blue Mound State Park.
This hilltop finish line, besides being the place to ponder the
insanity of it all, is the highest point in Southern Wisconsin (1,716
feet). For the fifth year, we will again be serving the infamous
Viking Goulash, as well as a plethora of other foods to replenish
those weary muscles. Entertainment will be provided, including a DJ. Look for Culver's to be there again this year with
some delicious custard as well.
Results: We have moved away from chip timing for the event. We wish to promote a safe, fun, and challenging ride to all participating. As in years past, there will be a time clock at the finish line to provide a time reference for riders.
Management:
Friends of Blue Mound State
Park, Inc. (FBMSP)
Training Opportunities:
Want to test yourself on the route on your own? See the Course
Description page and print off the maps, come on out and stay for the
day or the weekend in Mount Horeb and Blue Mound State Park, and give
a few route sections a try! (For lodging or things to do in or near
Mount Horeb, see the Mount Horeb
Area Chamber of Commerce.)
Rider Limit:
1,000 online registrations plus 300 lottery slots.
Rider Responsibilities:
Helmets are required for all participants in both rides. Riders agree
to follow all event rules as outlined here. Rider must agree to a
waiver to participate. This is not a race — please be respectful of
other riders who are not going at your pace. Safety and consideration
of our event neighbors is very high on our list. Violators will lose
their privileges to participate in the ride at the event's
discretion. Riders will obey WI state cycling rules, including obeying
all traffic signs, riding no more than two abreast when clear of
traffic, not obstructing traffic, and riding within their abilities
and in control at all times. Failure to do so will result in
expulsion.
Shirts:
A 100% cotton shirt will be provided to ride
participants. Please identify your size preference on your
registration form.
Cycling Jerseys:
Jerseys can be ordered at the time of registration or purchased the day of the event.
